Why is left channel sound weird after new plug/jack?
I had a loose connection, so I cut off the old 3.5 mm stereo plug/jack and cut a replacement from a spare cable. I soldered the three wires, but now the left channel sounds garbled/weird and often the vocal is missing, or very faint. The right channel is fine. I checked my work and the connections are good and since there are only three it's hard to do it wrong. What is the solution?
Thanks Classicsat, the colour-coding was ambiguous - that fixed it!
You switched the right channel signal with the ground, quite simply.
The Left channel is getting the difference, and the right channel is getting the inverse of what it should (but you might not notice).
