The H2 Zoom - What is it?
A small, hand held stereo digital recorder capable of true surround sound thanks to it's unique on-board microphone system called W-XY.
What is the H2 Zoom hand-held recorder ideal for:
- Band rehearsals
- Professional media
- Blog Podcasters
- Music concerts
- Songwriting sessions
- Conferences and seminars
- Rehearsals for theater groups
The H2 Zoom... is it the most amazing digital recorder out there? No, but it's being compared to pro models going for 3 times the price. It's quite small at 2.5 x 4.3 x 1.3 inches but this Zoom Recorder is equipped with double the microphones as similar devices and even much higher priced ones. Those are two reasons why they're selling an awful lot of them.
How Much Does it Cost?
When it first came out it sold for a few hundred bucks but today you can get it for well under $200.
The best things about it are:
- Dollar for dollar it really beats all other compatibles.
- The four mic capsules are a feature found only on this model.
- Nice on your wallet and also small in your hand!
Couple of the not-so-good features:
- Screen is a little small.
- It's audio limiter/compressor is a little slow to react.
One of the most useful features for me with this Zoom Recorder is that it records both MP3 and WAV formats... and in several different resolutions. So, for those important events you can select the pro audio setting of 24-bit/96kHz. You can save a ton of memory and record at an mp3 resolution setting.
The front grill on the Zoom Recorder is retro looking and very remindful of the classic 40's microphone look. Most people will be satisfied with all of it's popular features and there may be a few that some people won't even care for... unless you're a musician like me, in which case you'll also love the handy guitar tuner and metronome that are built-in.
It's unparalleled microphone patterns are called W-XY, these four mics allow for front and rear cardioid patterns and a 360 degree polar pattern.
What we're talking about here is the Zoom Recorder's unique multi microphone feature of the 4 microphones that can produce various kinds of surround sound recordings.
Here's an example of how you could use the Zoom Recorder to record a 3 piece band rehearsal:
Put the recorder in the middle of the group, facing the drums and behind it to either side would be the guitar amp and the bass amp You would then have a surround sound recording just like that!
Sometimes editing on a tiny machine like this can be hard to do on it's small screen so to overcome this problem, just plug it into the USB port on your computer to work more comfortably with all it's editing functions on your big screen.
