What is the rule about hitting the tennis ball before it clears the net?
During the Aussie Open match between Andy Roddick and Feliciano Lopez, López reached across the net and hit the ball before the ball cleared the net on Roddicks side. The look on this face was, 'That's okay, right?' and Roddick after running up to the net to hit the ball had the look on his face like, 'He can't do that, right?'
* The point was given to Lopez, I thought the ball had to clear the net to be hit.
** What's the scoop??
This brought up an extremely rare exception to the rule that says you can't reach over the net to hit the ball. And frankly, I'm surprised that both Lopez and Roddick didn't seem to know of this exception.
Prior to Lopez's shot in question, Roddick went for an overhead, but ended up just barely hitting the ball with the frame of his racquet. The ball still made it over the net, but it had a lot of backspin on it due to how it had been hit. When it bounced, there was actually enough backspin to make the ball bounce back to Roddic's side of the court.
Because the ball did, at one point, break the plane of the net, Lopez is fully allowed to reach over the net to hit the ball. So the rule should more be read as "A player cannot hit the ball until it has first broken the plane of the net". As long as it crosses the net at some point, anything goes. But Lopez still had to be careful to not touch the net. Had he touched the net, point would have gone to Roddick.
